MEASURING!
Measure to the best of your
ability. =-)
If you are measuring for Academy, the measurements I need are: Bust, Waist, Back Length, Neck &
Sleeve.
SUITS
BUST: Around the largest part of the chest. Do NOT use your bra size. The number should be a tad
larger than your bra size, as the bra size number is your chest size under the bust.
WAIST: Around the waist at the belly button. Jod will run higher
waisted than jeans or slacks.
SHOULDER:
From edge of shoulder bone at arm to the big bone at the bottom of your neck (nape), then double the number.
SLEEVE:
From edge of shoulder bone at arm down to where thumb meets hand.
NAPE TO WAIST: This measurement is important for placement of darts
on back of coat. In alterations darts can be lowered, but not raised (unless they were lowered at some point).
You want them to sit at natural waist. Measure from nape of neck to natural waist or right above where rear
starts, so jacket skirts will flow out nicely.
COAT LENGTH: From nape of neck down to bend in knee.
INSEAM: From crotch to floor in bare feet.
You will then want to add at LEAST THREE inches to that number to get the length of the inseam on the pants.
This is so the jods will still be long enough when sitting on the horse to cover the boots. (Please let me know if you
have already added the extra three inches when giving me rider's measurements).
OUTSEAM: From Waist down outside
of leg to floor in bare feet. Basically if your inseam is correct, the outseam will be. The difference of the
two numbers will basically be the "rise" of the pants.
SEAT: Around largest part of rear.
THIGH: Around upper thigh.
CALF: Around largest part of calf.
SHIRTS
As a rule, you want your shirt BUST and WAIST to be about 3" BIGGER than your actual measurements for comfort!
You do
want your collar to be snug for the best look.
Sleeve length is important for academy riders, sleeves should
still be long enough after rider bends arm in riding postion.
VESTS
BUST: measure largest area around chest.
WAIST:
around waist at belly button.
BACK LENGTH:
The length of the back of the vest is most important, especially in academy. By rule, if your back is long enough, the
front will automatically be. To measure person: Nape of neck down to bottom (not top) of waist band of the pants they
will be showing in.
DERBIES:
To measure your head, used cloth tape measure or string that you can then
measure on yardstick and measure the widest part of your head where your hat will sit. You can then Google for
hat size charts on line or send me the inches measurement.
